Queen Elizabeth International Competition 5th prize winner Ivan Karizna explores the cello’s expressive power through four remarkable works. Debussy’s Cello Sonata opens with impressionistic colour and poetic nuance, followed by Britten’s Cello Sonata—a compelling blend of wit, tension, and virtuosity. Guillaume Connesson’s Les Chants de l’Agartha transports listeners to a mystical, imagined world, fusing contemporary energy with mythic depth. The evening concludes with Rachmaninov’s lush and emotionally charged Cello Sonata, Op. 19—a cornerstone of the cello repertoire. From French elegance to British intensity, modern mysticism to Russian romanticism, this programme offers a rich, wide-ranging journey for curious ears and devoted classical fans alike.
